Cache Invalidation Patterns That Survive Traffic

By Daniel Kovacs · July 9, 2026 · Data

Engineers constantly repeat the classic computer science joke about cache invalidation, yet few design caches resilient to thundering herds. Request coalescing remains the critical design pattern: upon key expiration, an isolated worker fetches fresh data while concurrent requests receive stale records, converting a catastrophic database spike into an orderly transition.

Incorporating generation counters or version identifiers into cache keys eliminates complicated invalidation routines. When lookups construct keys using object identifiers combined with sequence versions, clearing caches becomes an ordinary datastore update, leaving obsolete keys to expire passively via LRU policies.

Monitor data staleness alongside standard cache hit percentages. Tracking latency and freshness simultaneously reveals scenarios where caches serve corrupt or outdated payloads indefinitely without ever raising threshold alerts.
